Article: THE TRUTH ABOUT CLEAN BEAUTY STANDARDS

THE TRUTH ABOUT CLEAN BEAUTY STANDARDS - Joik USA

THE TRUTH ABOUT CLEAN BEAUTY STANDARDS

In recent years, clean beauty has become one of the most popular terms in the USA beauty industry. Brands use it to suggest products that are safe, natural, and free from harmful ingredients. But here’s the truth: clean beauty has no official definition.

Each brand defines “clean” for itself, which can leave consumers confused and uncertain. That’s where Ecocert certification makes all the difference.

What Is Ecocert?

Founded in France in 1991, Ecocert is one of the world’s most respected certification bodies for organic and natural products. It doesn’t rely on vague promises. Instead, it applies strict, transparent, and independently verified standards. When a product carries the Ecocert logo, it means:

  • Ingredients are sourced responsibly and sustainably

  • No parabens, silicones, synthetic fragrances, or GMOs are allowed

  • Packaging must be recyclable or biodegradable

  • Production processes must meet strict environmental standards

  • The entire supply chain is reviewed and approved by auditors

For JOIK, our Organic line is certified by Ecocert under the COSMOS standard, guaranteeing that every step of production is honest, transparent, and sustainable.

Clean Beauty vs. Certified Beauty

So, how does clean beauty compare with Ecocert?

  • Clean beauty: a marketing term, with no universal rules or enforcement. One brand’s “clean” may still include questionable synthetics.

  • Ecocert: an independent certification with clear, enforceable standards and third-party audits.

In other words, clean beauty asks you to trust the brand. Ecocert certification proves the brand has earned your trust.

If you want to go beyond marketing claims, learn  how to read cosmetic ingredient lists (INCI) and understand what is actually inside a product.

Why Certification Matters

Consumers deserve to know exactly what they’re putting on their skin. Without certification, claims like "natural" or "clean" are open to interpretation. Certification removes the guesswork by providing:

  • Transparency – every ingredient is tracked and verified

  • Safety – harmful substances are banned

  • Sustainability – packaging, sourcing, and production must respect the planet

  • Trust – independent inspection guarantees compliance

When you see the Ecocert logo, you know the product has been held to the highest standard—not just a marketing promise.

The JOIK Philosophy

At JOIK, we believe honesty and beauty go hand in hand. That’s why we chose Ecocert certification for our Organic line. It reflects our values of transparency, sustainability, and respect for nature. We don’t just want to create beautiful products; we want to create trusted products that enrich lives without compromise.

Why This Matters to You

The beauty industry is full of labels, but not all of them mean anything. By choosing Ecocert-certified products, you’re making a conscious choice for:

  • Healthier skin

  • Cleaner formulations

  • Sustainable living

  • Honest, verifiable standards

Why choose Ecocert-certified beauty?

• Your skin is exposed to fewer unnecessary synthetic ingredients.

• The ingredients come from natural sources you can feel good about using every day.

• Know what's in your products. Less worry about what you're putting on your skin and your family's skin.

• Products are made with respect for the environment, helping reduce unnecessary impact on the planet.

• Botanical ingredients provide vitamins, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds naturally found in plants.

Multifunctional products help simplify your routine and reduce waste:

  • RE BOOST Collahen Cleansing Balm works as both a cleanser and a nourishing mask.
  • 3-in-1 makeup sticks can be used on lips, cheeks, and eyes.
  • Versatile formulas mean fewer products cluttering your bathroom.

• Support brands that invest in environmentally responsible practices, from sourcing ingredients to manufacturing products.

• Make a simple choice toward a greener, more conscious lifestyle.

• Feel confident in what you use every day.

• Trust that an independent certification body has already verified the standards behind the product.

• Avoid the uncertainty of self-defined "clean beauty" claims.

• Enjoy plant-based ingredients that help nourish and care for your skin.

• Support companies that prioritize both skin wellbeing and environmental responsibility.

• Choose products designed to be effective, not just natural.

• Reduce decision fatigue; when you see trusted certification, you know what you're buying.

• Feel confident that your purchase aligns with your values.

• Buy without hesitation, knowing you're choosing products backed by verified standards.

Because certification isn't just about ingredients. It's about making everyday choices easier, more transparent, and more aligned with the kind of world you want to support.

Which JOIK products are ECOCERT certified?

Every organic product line JOIK makes for skin and body has been independently audited and certified by ECOCERT to the COSMOS standard. That means every formula, every ingredient, every batch is reviewed and verified annually, not just once.

The certified lines cover the full skincare range — hydrating Moisture Magnet with Estonian birch sap and red algae, Re-Boost Collagen with Estonian alfalfa, and Re-Boost Glow with local forest berries along with the complete men's skincare line, all body care, the hands and feet line, fragrance-ree baby line, all self-tan products, and the entire makeup range including foundations, concealers, eyeshadows, lip oils, and makeup sticks.

This is not a selection of hero products chosen to carry the certification halo across everything else. Every product in every one of these lines goes through the same annual audit. If a formula changes, if an ingredient supplier changes, the product goes back through review.

Discover JOIK Organic, a collection of Ecocert-certified skincare and beauty products crafted in Estonia. Rooted in Estonia’s pristine nature and guided by strict global standards, our products go beyond clean beauty to deliver certified trust and timeless Nordic design. Because the truth is simple: real beauty is transparent, certified, and sustainable.

Frequently Asked Questions

I see "natural" and "organic" on so many products. What is actually the difference?

Natural means ingredients come from nature rather than being synthetically made in a lab. Organic means those natural ingredients were also farmed without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, so the plant itself was grown responsibly, not just harvested from somewhere. In an uncertified product, a brand decides for itself what "natural" or "organic" means.

In a certified product, an independent organization has verified it against a defined standard.

So what is ECOCERT exactly — a logo, a law, or an organization?

ECOCERT is an independent certification organization, founded in France in 1991. It is not a government body, and it is not a logo you can design yourself. It is a third party, such as an inspector, who has no stake in whether you pass or fail. They review our ingredients, suppliers, factory, and packaging, and either certify you or do not.

The logo on a product means they confirmed it. Without them, it is just a claim.

What is COSMOS then — and how does it relate to ECOCERT?

COSMOS stands for COSMetic Organic and Natural Standard. It is the unified benchmark that five major European certification bodies — including ECOCERT — developed together and launched in 2011, so that certified organic cosmetics would mean the same thing everywhere, rather than each organization having its own slightly different rules.

Think of COSMOS as the rulebook, and ECOCERT as one of the trusted referees who enforces it. When you see ECOCERT/COSMOS on a JOIK product, COSMOS is the standard applied, and ECOCERT is the organization that conducted the audit.

Does certified organic mean 100% organic ingredients?

Not exactly, and this is worth understanding. Water is one of the most common ingredients in skincare formulas, and water cannot be certified organic because it does not come from agriculture. This naturally affects the total percentage of organic ingredients in any water-based formula.

COSMOS ORGANIC requires that at least 95% of plant-based ingredients are from certified organic farming, and that at least 20% of total ingredients — including water — are organic. For products without water, like oils, the organic percentage can reach much higher. The exact percentage is disclosed on every certified product, which is why you will see a specific number on JOIK's labels rather than a vague claim.

If a product is made in Europe and certified there, does that mean anything in the US?

Yes. ECOCERT/COSMOS certification is specific to the product formula and how it is made, not to the country where it is sold. A product certified in Estonia carries that certification in every market, including the United States. The ingredients, the factory, and the supply chain that were audited do not change depending on where the product ends up.

JOIK's certification applies to every product available at joikusa.com.

Does certified organic skincare actually perform as well as conventional skincare?

This is one of the most common concerns and a fair one. The honest answer is that performance depends entirely on the specific formula, not the certification. What certification guarantees is the quality and origin of what goes in.  It does not limit what a formula can achieve.

JOIK's Re-Boost Collagen Day Cream, for example, uses lupin seed and alfalfa from Estonian farms alongside Bidens Pilosa bio-retinol — botanical actives with documented functions — in a certified organic formula. Clean and effective are not opposites.

Can a brand claim ECOCERT certification without verification?

No. ECOCERT certification requires independent audits of ingredients, sourcing, manufacturing, and documentation. Certification must be renewed regularly to maintain compliance.

Can a brand lose its ECOCERT certification?

Yes, and this is one of the most important things to understand about the standard. Certification is not a one-time award. ECOCERT audits every certified brand annually. If a formula changes, if a supplier no longer meets the standard, if the factory fails inspection — the certification lapses. This is why JOIK undergoes an audit every year, and why the badge on the bottle reflects current status, not a historical achievement.

I have seen the words "formulated to ECOCERT standards" on some products. Is that the same thing?

No, and this distinction matters. "Formulated to ECOCERT standards" means a brand has used the ECOCERT criteria as an internal reference but has not submitted to the independent audit process. It is a self-declaration using a recognized name. Actual certification requires applying to ECOCERT, having every ingredient reviewed, passing an on-site factory inspection, and being listed in ECOCERT's public database.

Is certified organic skincare only for people with sensitive skin?

Not at all. Sensitive skin is one reason people seek out certified formulas, and eliminating synthetic fragrances, parabens, and petrochemicals removes the ingredient categories most associated with irritation. But people choose certified skincare for many other reasons too. Peace of mind about what is on the label.

Respect for the environment.

The desire to support brands that have been independently held to account.

Trust — the kind that comes from knowing someone outside the company checked the work.

Sensitive skin gets a lot of attention in this conversation, but the reasons for choosing certified go much further than that.

How can I verify whether a product is genuinely certified?

Look for the ECOCERT or COSMOS logo and review the certification information provided by the brand. Certified products are subject to third-party verification and auditing. Discover more about JOIK certifications here.
